Home remedies to treat gallstones

You might be thinking that a major illness comes with symptoms that can be diagnosed easily. But, that’s just an illusion! There are some disorders and conditions that are hard to detect.

Problems like gallstones remain undetected in the gallbladder until they become painful. Before getting into the home remedies to treat gallstones, let us understand how gallstones are caused.

What causes gallstones?

Gallbladder stones or gallstones are hard, crystalline balls that are formed in the gallbladder due to the hardening of excess cholesterol in the gallbladder. These stones can vary from a small grain-sized stone to a large golf ball-sized stone that is excruciatingly painful, especially if they get lodged in the bile duct.

While surgery for getting rid of gallstones is quite common, it is better to take precautions and prevent their formation in the first place. The Gutcare clinic here provides some home remedies that can help treat gallstones.

1. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice and lemon water are well-known ingredients that dissolve gallstones. Lemon juice contains pectin that helps relieve the pain and the vitamin C in it makes the cholesterol water-soluble which eliminates gallbladder stones. Drinking fresh lemon juice on an empty stomach and then following it with a glass of warm water helps treat gallbladder stones.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is acidic and anti-inflammatory in nature, which could be useful in treating gallstones. Mix one spoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of apple juice and drink it to reduce inflammation and gallbladder pain. Also, mix apple cider vinegar with a spoon of lemon juice in warm water and drink this mixture to dissolve the gallstones.

3. Castor oil pack

Castor oil pack is another quick remedy to treat pain and gallbladder stones. Take a cup of pure, cold-pressed castor oil and warm it. Soak a cloth in the warm oil and squeeze out the excess oil. Now, place this cloth on the right side of the abdomen where the gallstone is usually located. Try this several times a week which helps relieve pain and treat your gallstones.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is well known for its anti-inflammatory and healing benefits. It helps stimulate your gallbladder to produce bile (the fluid that aids digestion) and also helps the gallbladder ease emptying itself. Incorporating turmeric into your diet can also reduce inflammation and gallbladder pain, thus helping prevent gallbladder stones.

5. Green tea

Green tea contains antioxidants that reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and relieve nausea. To ease the amount of gallbladder pain and improve gallbladder health, green tea is very helpful. Drinking two to three cups of green tea a day is also good for preventing gallbladder stones.

6. Magnesium

Magnesium can be an effective l component for gallbladder emptying. It can also soothe gallbladder spasms and pain. Magnesium deficiency can increase the risk of gallbladder stone formation. To reduce pain caused by gallbladder stones, mix one spoon of magnesium powder in warm water and drink every few hours.

7. Coconut oil

If you are prone to gallbladder problems, this natural remedy is perfect for you.  Coconut oil contains essential and healthy fats that can be easily digested by the liver. Slightly warm up the coconut oil, add lemon and ginger to it and blend nicely. Drink this mixture once every day, so that the accumulation of unhealthy fats, cholesterol, and bile salts in the gallbladder can be prevented.

Remember that certain remedies that aim at dissolving gallbladder stones fast can increase the risk of getting large stones. This may result in an immediate medical emergency.

As suggested by the experts in gastroenterology, it is always advisable to check with a gastroenterologist if you are suffering from gallbladder problems including gallstones. There are medications and also non-surgical processes to dissolve the stone.
